2008 Activities of Friends of Belfast Parks:
LATE WINTER/SPRING:
April 26: Certified behaviorist Don Hanson of Bangor presented a multi-media talk on canine behavioral language and stress signals to over 70 people at the Belfast Free Library.
April 6 - April Stool's Day. Eighteen members of Friends of Belfast Parks and supporters picked up almost 900 piles of dog feces at Steamboat Landing, The Common, and Heritage Park. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of the problem in Belfast of dog owners who leave their dog's waste to spread disease, leach into and contaminate Belfast Bay, annoy citizens who get it on their shoes, and detract from the beauty of Belfast.
March 27 - Quarterly Membership Meeting. Agenda items included a financial report, discussion of trying to save the McNally property adjacent to The Common, spring improvement projects, volunteers for upcoming Arts in the Park, and a progress report on the Belfast Dog Park.
February - FOBP held Puttin' On the Dog Jamboree on February 16, 2008, at the Belfast Boathouse. Events included a dogs toys and treat swap, aromatherapy for dogs, dog massage, dog caricatures by Paula Fisher, a "Jackson Paw-Lick" inter- active art with dogs, a visit from "Scooperman," a 50/50 raffle, a display of books about dogs by Left Bank Books, etc. The event yielded about $1200 toward the future dog park.

2007
WINTER:
December – FOBP sold baked goods and dog toys at the Belfast Area High School annual Christmas concert to raise money for the dog park; members and friends of FOBP marched with their dogs in the Belfast Christmas parade to draw attention to the future dog park.
FALL: September – FOBP helped with the photo booth of Peggy McKennafor Belfast's annual Weinerfest; FOBP held its quarterly meeting at the Wilma Moses Pavilion to review accomplishments of 2007, to discuss goals and projects for 2008, and to elect officers for the new year:

FOBP gave a dog park presentation to the Rotary Club; FOBP had a food concession at three of the events called "Music in the Park" at the Common; FOBP presented the Dog Park Proposal to City Council, subsequently approved!; FOBP provided refreshments at Founder's Day at City Park; FOBP and City Manager Joe Slocum painted the Wilma Moses Pavilion at Belfast City Park.
SUMMER: August – FOBP provided a food concession for three performances between July 29 - August 4 at this new outdoor event presented by the Belfast Maskers. July – FOBP planted annuals in front of one of the park signs and in the two planters on the Belfast Common walkway; 12th ANNUAL ARTS IN THE PARK – FOBP presented its yearly arts and craft event at Heritage Park, with musical entertainment on both days, drawing more than 4,000 visitors over two days; FOBP presented "Flash! in the Pans," a community steel drum band and picnic at Belfast Common; FOBP provided a food concession at the 1st annual National Boatbuilding Challenge. June – FOBP purchased and donated the fourth and fifth in a series of new park signs; FOBP volunteers contribued more than 50 hours of work during June, watering and maintaining the new plantings on Belfast Common; FOBP Dog Park Committee held an informational meeting for the public regarding its six month research efforts about a dog park for Belfast.
SPRING:
May – FOBP purchased refreshments and hosted a reception for the dedication of the newly resurfaced tennis courts in City Park.
April – "April Fool's Day." FOBP and dog owners picked up dog waste at Steamboat Landing and Belfast Common.
